What is depression?

Depression, or major depressive disorder, is a condition that affects your mental health. It’s extremely common and can have widespread effects on your physical and emotional wellness. It causes negative feelings such as sadness as well as a loss of interest in the topics and activities that you usually enjoy.

In order to receive a depression diagnosis, the symptoms must last for at least two weeks and be distinguishable from your normal feelings and behaviors. For many people with the condition, a decline in work or school performance is a sign of depression that needs treatment.

What are the symptoms of depression?

Many symptoms can come from depression, and not everyone with the condition gets all of them or feels exactly the same as others with depression. During your assessments, your providers ask you to describe your symptoms, which may include:

• Appetite changes
• Sleep changes or insomnia
• Fatigue
• Lack of energy
• Guilt
• Trouble with decision-making
• Thoughts of suicide or death

Because certain underlying conditions and nutrient deficiencies can cause similar symptoms, it’s important for your providers to test for them and rule them out before confirming you have depression. 

Depression comes from a combination of genetic, biochemical, and environmental factors, which your provider considers while recommending treatment. 

How does ketamine therapy help depression?

Ketamine therapy is a nontraditional treatment for depression that resists other forms of treatment or severe depression with suicidal ideation. Ketamine itself is an anesthetic medication that also has dissociative effects. While it’s active, it reduces pain while changing your perception of the sights and sounds around you.

At ReYou Ketamine Treatments, your providers talk to you about your options for ketamine treatment. Ketamine treatments can be administered one of four ways. IV Infusion (most effective method), Intramuscular Injection, Sublingual (under the tongue lozenge), and Intranasal spray.

Our staff typically use infusions since we can titrate doses and it has the highest bioavailability. Ketamine can your perception of sight and sounds and may have temporary feelings of dissociation.Side effects may include dizziness, nausea, or vomiting, and raise your blood pressure. Because of these responses,  your providers at ReYou administer ketamine treatments under medical supervision at our clinic, no matter which form you take.

Your providers determine the frequency of your ketamine treatments for depression based on your health, symptoms, and other factors. They calculate your dosage according to your weight. Most depression treatment plans with ketamine include 8 infusions over a three- or four-week time period.
